Paris Show Tony G

I have no idea how this show will come out. Will the WPT want me as their new bad boy?

Just so that everyone knows I wanted to win this event really bad and did all I could to win that is within the rules. I came up just short but I loved every minute of playing this final table. I may be rude to you if you are at the table with me in a WPT final but remember, its never personal. Off the table I respect everyone, but when you play with me at a WPT final then its a fight.

The chip leader was my target, and I feel that I got him to play very bad. I hope I was not too nasty; please judge me and let me know what you think about me via this blog as many comments as possible are welcome. All views are welcome. As long as the show was fun for everyone at home then I am ok with any comments and I will leave them all up, just please dont swear. I never ever abuse the dealer or swear when playing. If the majority on here feel that I am bad for poker because of the way I behaved in Paris, then I will change my conduct, and look for help.

well i’ve only seen you play once so far on the WPT first season. i liked your style, i thought it was pretty clear to me that you had a lot of heart and your table manners were a strategy. phil hellmuth takes a lot of heat for his attitude at the table, but is still one of the most well respected pokers players in the world. whatever strategy works best for you is worth carrying out, i’d say just be super aware of boundaries. that’s my opinion, can’t wait to see you in action again. jj

Tony, you are by far my favorite poker player to watch. you are a confident player, and your ability to get people off of their game is definately a huge asset. Keep making final tables so i have something interesting to watch as i sit at home playing online.

Tony you are awesome. It was exciting to watch you play in Paris. I hope to be able to see more poker from action from you.

    Tony,

I hope you have a good heart, because I just saw the wpt event and you should be ashamed, if you understand the word, of yourself. You are a mockery of someone’s image of a card player. I’ve played w/ Surinder & he’s one of the nicest card players around. You, fuckin’, ain’t.

You are a bad joke gone wrong. Dig it?

  5. Anonymous Says:

Tony you made a crucial error with the J4 imho. Other than that you played very well.

Obviously your caustic actions at the table, although controversial, work for you because a) you are getting famous and b) it throws people off their game.

I’m not saying what you do is right, I’m saying it works for you. I fully expect newbie players to copy your rough and tumble style as well because they see what kind of attention it brings to you.

This was a very entertaining episode–one of the better ones. So thanks for that.

I gotta ask you though, how bad does it suck to walk through the room full of people wishing you to lose? Is everyone cordial? Did they congratulate you on your finish? Or are they all wankers?

I understand you think what you do is a strategy, obviously some who post here don’t agree with it. Watching 9 robots play cards can be like watching paint dry. Anything that adds color to the game is good. Anyone who calls you an ‘asshole’ for what they see on TV is just as out of line.

  7. Anonymous Says:

Trash talk is one thing, personal comments and directing fingers etc. is another. I would imagine your chock full of tells style is neat, but not for me. Good player, for sure though. One thing I wondered, anyone ever reached accross the table and adjusted your smile?
Fun to watch no doubt, but keep your antics within reason.

    Take care and good luck.

  8. Tony G Says:

I want everyone to know its never personal. There is never hate of any player. Once on the table I love to play upset players etc but just then. We are friends with Surrinder Sunar he is great and deserved to win this. Unlike Howard Leaderer who I beat up once he did not take this of teh table and we talk all the time I really respcet this guy.

I love the game and I love life we are all different and we all react different in certain situations. I dont have people wishing me to lose in fact most French people are very firendly with me because they know how I really am.

TONY G. You are the greatest! I will crush you so hard….classsic. How old were you when you moved out of Litva?

  10. Tony G Says:

I was 11 when I left Lithuania to go to Melbourne.

  11. Billy Joe Says:

Well played Tony G. Mark of a good player to get any edge possible I believe. At the level where you play many people who just spectate only catch ‘tidbits’ of the big picture.

It was obvious to me that all the antics were a part of your game, not personal attack. You made that clear every time you busted another player.

In my opinion, if players at your level cannot cope against your tactic — they would do well to learn.

For what it’s worth, you have my respect.

  12. Anonymous Says:

I don’t really have a problem with the way you acted at the table, except when another player had you dominated and you sucked out on the turn or the river.

At that point you turned from an annoyance into a total jerk - a lucky jerk at that.

Acting a certian way to keep your opponents off balance at a table is one thing. Acting like your superior play is why you won when you backed into a flop is quite another. In fairness, you seem like an action player and your behaivor baits action likes honey baits ants. That might be why it works for you.

  13. Gary Killops Says:

I think you were out of line.

Nothing wrong with cheering yourself on and getting excited when you win an “all in” but you go overboard when you rub it in their face, especially when it is a bad beat.

I know what you were trying to do, and you even succeeded but a level of respect is still in order. Some players come close to the line, you just march right on past it.

When asked on the show Luske even thought you needed to be warned and he is a guy who can put anyone on tilt however he still repects the player.

  14. Tony G Says:

To be honest I am suprprised that it came out that way. Sure I am excited when I win a hand but I take getting bad beats really well. I did receive a few of them in this event and took it really well I mean I could have won the whole thing if my 10 10 held up against Surinders K 6.
I will really make sure that I dont rub it in when I do win a hand next time.

  15. Tony G Says:

Marcel Luske is a great friend and a Partner of mine. He knows me really well and we have got very close recently including on the last EPT a few days ago in Monaco.
I have improved and will continue to do so. I do very much respect everybody in real life. Please keep in mind that playing poker on TV is not real life. Just making it is great and if anyone does make it then they can do what they want during that show. I dont swear I dont abuse the dealers. If the players can not take it then I am sorry for them. Perhaps they should stay in the safety of the home game.

  16. Anonymous Says:

After watching the last show that you were on in Paris (where surinder raped you) I have come to the conclusion that not only are you the worst Poker player I have ever seen in my life but you are also the luckiest. If I ever sat at a table with you and you pulled your stupid antics on me id stick you in your stopid little face. Other than that good luck I like your style. Pop a coller and holler

  17. Tony G Says:

Can argue about being a good or bad player only results can speak for that and there are not many yet although I have made the money in 5 WPT events out of 8 played.

Being lucky is great I guess that is what I need to rely on. I love the game though and gettign lucky is part of it every single hand u play.

  18. mohrt Says:

After seeing you play for the first time, I was hooked. Yes, your style of play can ruffle feathers at the table, but that is part of the genius! Anything to get a player on tilt, playing irratically is certainly an advantage in poker. Of course you have to do this within limits, which you do just fine. If the other players would just laugh a little *with* you and stay off tilt, they’d be fine.

You also bring huge interest to the spectators of the game. People look for something different, something unique. People like to watch Hellmuth because he gloats about his skill and whines about the bad beats. Its the antagonist that keeps the game interesting, and you are definately one of them. Whenever I watch poker, you’re one of them I look for.

  19. Gary Killops Says:

Do you agree then with Marcel? comments that you needed to be warned?

  20. Tony G Says:

I am not sure what Marcel ment I wish tehy showed the whole interview. I have just written to him and asked him to write here.

If in his oppinion I need ot be warned about something that i did then I respect that. He was a supporter during this evnt know that. Great guy that I respect all teh time appart from when we fight on the poker table( I am an animal then, I say this NO FRIENDS IN POKER) If i want to check i say FRIENDS

  21. Walling Says:

Dont listen to the critisizm. You are a fantastic player and anyone who says otherwise is obviously speaking out of a personal dislike and jealously. You where the inspiration for me takeing up poker, the game that I now love and I thank you for that.

    Tom

  22. Tony G Says:

That is great to hear I am glad. As you all see I have only deleted one post where swear words were used. All oppinion is welcome I love it all.

I am just glad it was a show that was controversial just like me.

  23. Gary Killops Says:

    Walling,

You missed the point. I do not dislike Tony and I certainly not jealous of him.

To make it to more than one final table does not come on luck alone. Tony has the skills, and bets when the math suggests he should should.

Putting people on tilt is part of the game. I think the question here is how far is too far when it comes.

If others decide to copy Tony’s style they more than likely will fail because they do not have the basic poker skills to back up their antics.

I don’t disagree with Tony’s stategy. I just believe he went to far and needed to at least be warned.

Tony - I would really like to read what Marcel Luske has to say. Hopefully he will accept your invite here.

    All the best,
    Gary Killops

I love the back tracking on your part Tony. I must truly admire Sunar for his discipline and composure throughout an obviously unenjoyable situation. Here in the Southern US, we treat table images such as yourself with physical confrontation and a quick trip to the nearest exit. It worked for you. I must give you credit, though, for being able to talk so much trash and still maintain a decent card game. Well, I guess you didn’t exactly do that either. I’d rather be lucky than good anyday as well. I have just one request of you. Poker already suffers from a “shady” image. No class table images such as the one you exhibit only perpetuate all that is negative in the poker world. My request is that you elevate your game and bring a bit of class to the poker table.

  25. Putt Blick Says:

Tony, I Love Poker, I’m a confident player; I’m Loud, antagonistic, and often bold in my play. Some, at times might label me an asshole! However, I too only use this harsh attitude as strategy to throw my opponents off their game. Most of the time it works, sometimes not. Outside the poker tables I love everyone and treat them with great respect. It’s exciting to see someone like you using my game plan. Keep on trucking.

  26. Tony G Says:

I am speaking to Marcel right now here is what he said.

Marcel said that I should be warned for drininking too much. He said to the tournamnet director that they should warn me, before giving me any kind of penalty which I was close to getting.
Just shows you what TV cutting can do. He just wanted to make sure that I dont get drunk too much.

  27. Anonymous Says:

    Tony,
You are by far the most entertaining poker player I have ever seen.

Sometimes my mouth gets going as I get REALLY caught up in final-table excitement!!!!

I think that the producers of television poker (not just the W.T.P.) will “highlight” celebrations that invoke strong responses (whether liked or not, I am referring to W.S.O.P. and Josh Arieh) and you were the only person with any EXTRA personality.

I have played with players like yourself (very boisterous) and I remember more about those tables then most.
But all-in-all some people have a very subdued, less verbal attitude and see these actions/comments can be regarded as highly offensive. But not me.

Hope to see you at more final tables…Utwolf

  28. Tony G Says:

I do note what you say. I will try to have a better image when i play.

I am not a shady character I am honest they way I am I dont cheat when i play i dont set things up to get peoples monies. I dont think that I can profect a bad image for poker I only project my personality during the play of WPT final.

  29. Anonymous Says:

That explains the guzzling of water towards the end. Too funny!

  30. Dan Says:

Saw the Paris show - it really was a show! I thought it was great - I have no problem with the trash talking since people can always give it back! I would not, however, encroach on “players space” I think that crosses the line i.e. leaning over and getting close to a player borders on physical aggression - so I reckon you should drop that part of your game. I think you were pretty sporting when you knocked out players which is good - but man I have never seen more mentally beaten up and dejected players leaving a room in my life! - love to meet you on the floor some day …then again…

  31. Anonymous Says:

IT’S A FLUSH! that was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on the WPT.

We’ve all seen no class players who show no respect…and I would not say Tony G is one of them. I thought it was clear Tony respected the other players, he shook everyone’s hand, he never insulted anybody for who they were, just poker talk. Sure it’s annoying to play with someone like that, but it works for Tony, and good poker players should be able to (at least try) to tune him out..and it was obvious that some players could ignore it (and even laught at it), while others allowed themselves to get annoyed.

    IT’S A FLUSH. haha. classic.

    Tony,

I have watched just about every WPT & WSOP event on TV….and I must say, that last nights show was the first time that I wanted to stop watching.

Maybe it was the editing, but you would not stop running your mouth and it was untolerable after a while…you were like a barking dog that wouldn’t shut uup.

Regardless of the fact that it worked in your favor, you were out of line on several occassions.

I think when you watched it from our perspective, you realized that you need to tone it down a bit.

By the way, how hot is Shana Hiatt in person? :)

  33. Anonymous Says:

    I saw the WPT episode.

As long as you respect the dignity of the other players, and refrain from making offensive comments (for example personal attacks) I don’t have a problem with it.

Trash talk is actually quite funny. :-D :-D :-D

And dude… what were you smoking when you called with Jack four offsuit?

  34. Anonymous Says:

    Continued from 7:16 PM.

And yeah… maybe a couple of times you were a little borderline there.

But it would be cool to see you on TV at a final table with another player who also loves to trash talk… just remember what goes around comes around! Hehe

  35. Tony G Says:

calling with J-4 was horrid I was a little drunk in the end. Was having too much fun.

  36. Anonymous Says:

    Tony G,

You are the man. Keep it up, and good luck in future tournaments.

  37. FlashKW1 Says:

I have never been so thoroughly entertained and captivated by any player’s style AND heart as I was by yours. You had me hating you so badly… and then by the end, I was totally in your corner. The style you have is unorthodox to say the least, but you made it plain when you defeated some of your rivals, that it was “not personal” and it was “still just a game”. Thank you for adding alot of spice and sauce to a sometimes boring event. You’re truly a character worth watching. I know I will from now on wherever you play! (and thank you for not swearing!)

  38. Anonymous Says:

    Hi Tony,
people in this blog keep telling you that watching you makes good TV. I disagree, it was actually embarrising to see you humilate the other players.. see them with bent heads, not daring even to talk. The atmosphere around the table was a bad one… I did not like it at all. I can respect a lot of the poker plays you did, but your behaviour was crossing the line. What bothered me the most was when you got into the other players face…not so much what you said.

You keep saying that you do not direspect the other players. Is that really true…you kept telling Surinder that he was scared (of loosing)…which is like saying you are not brave enough playing with me…is that not disrespect?? For me it is! The really sad part of it all was to see Surinder actually being afraid of playing you.(so you were somewhat right although in my book disrespectful) Seeing him folding top pair with the chance to win the tourny was sad…it was not good TV.

I have heard from people that have met you off the table and they say you are a really nice guy. So my suggestion is that you bring some of that back to the table, because the way you acted in Paris was not funny and did not make good TV. It was only embarrasing in my mind. If you bring your some of your good qualities to the table, stay out of peoples faces and try to your trashtalking with a little more finesse…than you would be much more interesting to watch and maybe you also would earn some respect from other players and people watching…and I bet you would still do as good!

    Jonte

  39. Tony G Says:

Seeing him folding top pair with the chance to win the tourny was sad…it was not good TV.

What more can I say? I got into Surinders face true but believe me it was just a game he was sittign next to me. He won but if I got him to fold the best hand several times then I achieved what I wanted.

I take your advice and I will make an effort to respect pplayers more when I play.

  40. Anonymous Says:

i keep watching the “IT’S A FLUSH” thing over and over again… its seriously my favorite part of the WPT ever

Tony, if i ever make it to a live event you are playing… i hope it would be cool for me to track you down for an autograph haha

    Keep it up!

  41. Tony G Says:

That will be no problem. I am sure I will have time to talk with everyone.

  42. KenP Says:

How you play your game is your business. I am sure you tilted several people to your benefit at that table.

My problem is one of image. Poker is blossoming with new players showing up every day. I fear you and ‘Tilt’ provide animage that will keep new players out and that is poker’s lifeblood. So, I have to consider you a detriment to poker.

I know most casinos won’t put up with that kind of crap. The finger pointing challenge in particular. That will get you and invite to the parking lot at a lot of casinos. And those good ol’ boys don’t have a sense of humor to just laugh you off.

  43. Tony G Says:

I just wish taht you would understand this is the WPT. Edited in such a way to make a great show.

I dont point fingers at people its just a game. How can my image be bad? Its TV, freedom of speech!!!
I hope that it effects people the right way no everybody has to behave like me. First of all you need to make it to the fianl 6 and then Its everybodys right to act as they wish.

Please dont forget I have never had a warning from any tournamnet director I have also never recievec any kind of penalty during a WPT event.

  44. Anonymous Says:

You say you only acted this way at the WPT final table, but they showed you confronting players with the same crass behavior earlier in the tournament (flashback segments). So, time to change your story?

It was a very good boost to my bank roll yest around 400k USD.

    It really did help.

  48. Anonymous Says:

You say you didn’t cuss the whole show, but i do remember hearing a “beep” when surinder turned over the pocket jacks. Don’t belive me? review the tape, you’ll see it.

  49. compulsiveOnlineTalker Says:

It’s me again. I know how fun trash talking can be… believe me I trash talk online all the time, and have been muted by room managers. :-( So I know where talking smack comes from.

Having said that, you might want to consider with the growth of the game and new exposure and all the people being introduced to it and so forth, that you project the right image and don’t turn people off (like sucking out on a dominated hand and then bragging about it).

Just be mindful of what you say and how you say it when you do trash talk. If you’re mindful of that and respect someone’s dignity (like I said before) then smack can help further grow the game by attracting more viewers.

Bring it on! I love good smack. Hee hee

I think that the WPT in paris was very fun to watch. I thought you were so funny Tony and you have a lot of heart, skill, and guts to do some of those plays and thats what it takes to be good. Throwing players off is just a strategy and shouldn’t be taken personally. I do not think your outta line in any way. I wish you the best and many more wins tony good luck to yah always…

    Dear Tony,

I am not an idiot but have picked my fare share of winners in the best but never bet on any as I am not much of a betting man. But now along comes Pocker on TV and I can not stop watching it and then I seen you playing at the Aviation Club in Paris. You were absolutely the best reality TV experience I have ever witnessed. Hey, Tony,

just saw it today for the first time and I think you did go a little over the top but not by much. in general, you do what you need to do within the rules. if they didnt warn you during play, then it was fine, although, as I said, in my view it was a little too much at times. One more thing - thks for showing what I should prepare for in WSOP - otherwise you or someone else like you would have caught me by surpise

  58. Tony G Says:

I just have a few drinks in Paris since that event I have not been taking any drinks. I am amazed at the great reponse I had here thantk you very much. I also appreciate and respect people who offered advice or were critical that is also fair enough. I will tone down a little next time and make it more fun for you all.

  59. Anonymous Says:

    Tony,

I’ve been playing this game a long time and have seen about every kind of personality and behaviour imaginable, but yours crossed the line…especially for a “professional”. Sifting through the BS, it’s evident you have some talent. Do you have so little confidence in that talent that you must resort to WWF type tactics? Yes, psychology in poker is important, but there are far more creative ways to get inside people’s heads and put them on tilt without having to “trick up” your game with your gimmicks and antics. In reality, it’s so transparent anyway (as many on this board have noted), so in the long run they won’t work on true professionals anyway. From what I saw, you have enough raw talent to do well (and perhaps much better) without them. You can still be entertaining without all the static in your game.

My opinions, for what they’re worth. Good luck going forward.

    Regards,
    EG

  60. KenP Says:

You are correct that the show is edited and may or may not resemble what actually took place. Paul Phillips has pointed this out also. He was made to look pretty dumb/passive/frustrated in the heads up. In his case he did little other than grimace at times. Your actions were an editors dream. And you were the one responsible for making his dreams come true.

Concerning smack talk. I have done it but my idea of smack is humor that cuts like a scalpel. Yours seems more the broad ax variety. I have an online Aussie friend that is as good at smack as they come–he actually is a doctor and can kill with two scalpels… :) He was rather disgusted and embarrassed that you reside in Oz.

I think it was Pudgy Pearson who told the story of an old player from his era. He said something like: He was the tightest player you ever saw when sober; half in the bag he was your worst nightmare at the tables; in the bag he was the bigest fish that ever swam at the river. Tell, me…you aren’t a tight player sober are you? :)

  61. Tony G Says:

Well not too many are embarrassed that I reside in OZ if somebody is I guess they shold post here.

I am who I am I dont pretend to be different. The show cmae out that way its just a show its fun for me. If you hate me I respect you if you liked and saw something good in it that is great. On all the forums the main message I see is that people loved the show. That is great good for poker and I am sure it will keep growing with entertaining shows like we had.

  62. TONYGHATER Says:

Hey busboy do the world a favour and find another country to represent. You are an embarresment to poker and most of all to Australia. Pull your crap with me at the table and you better be able to throw hands as well as you flap that wind tunnel mouth doughboy. You disgust me.

If You people have to resort to hitting and fighting if tony gets under your skin then he is getting under your skin. He respects you off the table nothing is personal, like he said, Heck i would be laughing if i was at the table with him, its pure entertainment listening to Tony chat at the table, Watch the show again Surrinder didnt seem to be bothered by it, i would be playing his game back with him. Good Show Tony, keep up your good poker Hoepfully you will make some more wpt final tables.
Also it would be great if you can get tony G at the same final table as Elix Powers, now that would be a great show.

  64. Anonymous Says:

    Tony,

Don’t say you never swear while playing. As I recall, you were bleeped out on more than one occassion during that broadcast, so when you make a statement like that and then do the opposite, you lose credibility in the best case scenario….or look like a flat out liar in the worst case.

Also, in your first post on the Paris show, you write “If I get EVERYONE saying on here that I’m bad for poker the way I behaved in Paris then I am stopping the way I conduct mysel and looking for help.” Well, there’s no way you’re going to get “everyone” saying your behaviour was bad, so I guess you covered yourself and will continue your classless behaviour, but the fact you’re questioning whether it’s bad or not is telling. It’s like an alchoholic finally waking up one morning and asking…”I wonder if I’m drinking too much”. Maybe they can’t stop themselves, but they’re smart enough to realize they should.

  65. NYC-Fe Says:

    Tony,
I have to admit that I was rooting for Surinder at heads up, but I thought your play with the 4 8 against his top pair was absolutely fantastic, anyone who doubts your skill should watch that hand. In terms of your “antics”, I thought they were extremely effective and made for great entertainment. The fact that you have so many people completely divided on their opinion of you proves that people like to watch you play and will tune in solely to watch you play. BTW, I’m not 21 yet so I cant go to casinos, but I have never seen chips like the ones at the Grand Prix, that 200,000 “bar” was tight!

I enjoyed your performance in Paris, Tony. If nothing else, it made for a very entertaining two hours of television. Your approach threw a Hall of Famer off of his game heads-up, and that should be indication enough that your unorthodox style gives you a powerful edge. How you manage to keep your game straight in your head while you talk the talk is a mystery to me, but you pull it off quite well. Keep it up, and here’s hoping we’ll see you on the WPT again before too long.

    Tony,

Even though I was rooting hard for Surinder, your are still my dawg, I like the way you play and it is very obvious that you get in peoples’ heads and use it for your advantage…may I ask, what internet poker sites do you like/play the most and why? Thanks dude.

Like your antics or loathe them?? My guess is that which side one falls on can be determined fairly accurately by generation…with many more people under 30ish more likely to think your actions are cool and acceptable; and most older players thinking you’re a disrespectful and classless baffoon.

Poker is going to get professional sponsorship soon. Those players who project an attitude that advertisers want to pay for, will get huge sponsorship deals. We’re talking a minimum of $2-5 Million per year JUST for endorsements.

You may very well find a European sponsor who likes your attitude. But speaking from my experience in American Sports Marketing, your attitude will NOT play here, and you’re throwing away a possible fortune.

    Your choice, loud mouth.

Tony, if poker doesnt work out for you, try standup comedy. Your fucking hysterical. Very intimdating. Keep it up.

I couldn’t disagree more with the poster two posts up. The American market loves a cocky swagger, and I think you will find 90% of the people on this blog who are positive about Tony are male, American sports fans.

Anericans embrace the ‘characters’ of sport more than any other country..why do you think the WWE is so big here, yet can’t get arrested anywhere else in the world?

  74. Anonymous Says:

I noticed one thing about your outspoken, verbally abusive, antics…You never whine when your hand gets beat. I respect that.

I enjoy your attempts to gain a psychological advantage over your
opponents. It makes for great entertainment. And if it takes them off their game, and causes them to make mistakes they normally wouldn’t make, then I would deem it effective.

I would love to see you play a heads up final against Phil Helmuth Jr.

Just one question, do you ever play on UltimateBet.com, and under what pseudonym? I would love to see how your game stacks up on the internet, where your antics would be less effective and you would have to rely more on your play.

    Good luck in the future.

Tony, you were my favourite player when I saw you on tv the first time in Paris. However this time I think you went a little overboard.
You really didn’t let up on Surinder and after awhile it was uncomfortable to watch.
I was rooting for you the whole way but then I started to root for Surinder because I felt so bad for him.
If you can tone it down a little you can still be one of the fans favourites.

Someone remarked on the 84 hand and it was inspired odds play. I think the announcers even commented that the hand put you in a position to dominate. Then, you flat ass blew it–possibly for the reason Luske commented on.

Many have commented favorably on your antics and everybody is entitled to an opinion. Mine is that you blew the win with loose, silly play that showed a lack of maturity or impaired thought processes. SS had your number and played you like a piano.

I am ok with anything that Surinder would say during play and would not call for a ruling.

  82. Anonymous Says:

Tony!!!! Dont listen to the haters… your aggressive playing style and table talk is what this game is all about. Please continue to dominate any table that u sit at. Not everyone can say they are fast becoming a poker legend, u can.. I wish u the best of luck and will continue to watch your career as well as be rooting for you to win… Its a great game isnt it?

  83. BRDD Says:

    Hey Tony,

I don’t think you were out of line at all. You did everything you did inside the rules of the game. It also says a lot that you have never been warned or penalized during any tournament. Your style works well and it isn’t your fault that some people can’t accept how you play.

With that being said, I have another question for you: Are you married or in a relationship? I’m single and ready to mingle.

    ~J-RATT

    IT’S A FLUSH!!!

If your people skills could catch up to your poker skills, you’d be okay. Just shut up sometimes, keep it inside. It’s okay to get angry at times in the moment, but don’t keep it going. Be like Marcel Luske. Friendly to talk, deadly at the table.

  87. Anonymous Says:

The censoring of TonyG by the WPT editors was just the word “BALLS.” I believe both times he was bleeped, Tony said something like, “You need some balls to play me” or something like that. I was cracking up. I don’t consider that swearing but I guess the Travel channel felt like they needed to protect some virgin ears.

I don’t think Surrinder’s lay down of top pair was a bad one. He got way too involved in that hand. Maybe it was due to Tony’s trash talk, maybe not. I have to give credit to Tony for that push, drunk or not ;) . Seems like Surrinder just had a good read that Tony was bluffing but when it came down to it, the hand just wasn’t worth the gamble so he layed it down. I think a better example of when Tony got under Surrinder’s skin was the hand he made him bet that huge €200,000 plaque. I’d never seen one of those before. It was priceless when Tony won that. I thought he was going to hang it around his neck *bling* *bling*.

As a few others have pointed out, the only problem I had was with some of the over agressiveness of getting into other people’s personal space. You can call it editing, camera angles, drunkeness, or you sitting close to each other but those types of aggressive motions are borderline assault. I’m not saying you were assaulting anyone but it’s probably best to steer clear of those grey areas. And yes, you don’t have to physically touch someone to assault them.

  88. Tony G Says:

I agree with that 100% and there is no way I would ever be agressive to anyone during a poker game.
I think the TV angels made it like that I know for sure that Surinder never felt any threat from me, nor would I ever consider using anything close to phisical contact during play to get an edge.

I will be more carefull next time so that it never appears that way in the future if I do make any TV shows.

We had an incident with Hiward during 2003 WPT event in Paris. THis was with 11 players left. He was on my right and raised on the button I went all in with Q-3 ge mucked and I opned up for him then I kept upsetting him by talking about how he can not fold when i re-raise etc I was very nasty to him. He did not handle it all and his game went down he was out 11th being in chip lead position. When he was knocked out I went to shake his hand and say that it was just a game he jumped backwards, the whole experiance was very personal to him and he refused to sahke hands or talk to me at all.

I respect Howard he used to be a great player and has had great results in poker. Recently I guess business with full tilt poker takes up a lot of his time so his poker has gone way down with no results at the WPT for a long time.

He is from a different world a banking family and I am a guy of the street I guess he can knock people like me back when they want to shake hands.

Although your antics are a little bit strange, I congratulate you on your finish in the event. I am not going to judge your skills as a poker player based on the small TV clips shown, but 5 cashes out of 8 deserves some respect.

I understand the reasons behind your antics, I guess you feel that it gives you a slight edge over the other players. Although I do feel that it isn’t necessary to berate or belittle a player after a bad beat, that just seems very disrespectful. You have many of his chips, that should be satisfaction enough. But I do commend you for handling your bad beats very well. I noticed that you took your beats with stride and did not whine or berate a player that got lucky.

Congrats and GL in future events.

I WAS SHOCKED WHEN YOU HIT THE TABLE…BUT SO WAS SURINDER…AND HE IS THE ONLY ONE IT WAS REALLY FOR…I THINK. IF YOU HAD DONE THAT NEXT TO ME IN THAT SITUATION…I WOULD HAVE STOOD UP AND LET YOU MAKE THE NEXT MOVE. IS THE ACTION BARBARIC? YES. IS IT AGAINST THE RULES? NO. YOU WOULD HAVE PUT ME ON TILT.
IF YOU HAD HIT HIM, YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN ARRESTED. BUT A TABLE WILL NOT PRESS CHARGES FOR ASSAULT AND BATTERY. WELL PLAYED…BUT YOU LEFT IT ALL TO CHANCE AT THE END. TOO MUCH MONEY RIDING ON THOSE FINAL TOO SPOTS TO EXTRACT ALL THE SKILL YOU EMPLOYED EARLIER IN THE MATCH. GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE.

  99. Tony G Says:

Surinder was also hittign the table. What came out on tv was not reality there was never anything close to any threat or phisical violance. Surinder does have a balck belt in Karate which was said on the show. He beat me fair and square and good luck to him in the future he is truly a great player and a legend in EUrope.

  100. Kevin Cole Says:

    Tony,

I can understand how many players think you go too far, but I don’t. I pay close attention to your play (at least what they show on the edited version) and you never attack the other player personally, or even criticize their play in any “real” way.

To me, a comment like “you’d better take better care of your chips” isn’t disrespectful, it’s just meant to get in someone’s head.

As every person was knocked out, you immediately went and made sure they understood that it was nothing personal.

It would be a pleasure to sit at a table with you. I might get a little irritated when it was directed at me, but if it affected my game - it would be MY fault.

I’m curious Tony, to hear your opinions on other “loudmouths” of Poker…

played against Helmuth? Josh Arieh? What is your opinion of these players…

I’ll give you mine. Helmuth is harmless, but a baby.

Arieh is one of the true jerks in poker in my opinion. What he does is far worse than the Tony G. antics.

Anyway. It’s a pleasure to participate in your blog. I hope to see you at another final table soon.

  101. cantseefade Says:

I, like most others, thought you were a vile human being when I first saw you on tv. Reading this, you seem like a decent (although childish) person who uses his behavior to gain an edge during play. I’ve only got one question for you: have you ever played at the same table as Phil Helmuth- and if so, how did it go?

  102. Thatman Says:

Do you do this to your opponents in every tournament? Do you treat Phil Ivey and Gus Hansen the same way you treated Surinder?

    What Gives?

    Thatman

  103. Tony G Says:

    Ok,
There is lots in this blog about Phil and me. We catually satyed in the same hotle during WPT tunica.
Met at the airport in Memphis and got a rent a car together. We became buddies.

Phil is a very good player, obviously he behaves different to me since he thinks he is the best in the world. I think I am a long way from that and just have fun playing.

During the 15k Bellagio WPT December me and Phil had even stacks both very large with around 50 players left from 380. I really mouthed off to him and we had several huge pots and clashes. I was able to win chips of him during this day. We both made the money and went out nearly together he lost KK vs AJ for a pot that would have made it very posssible for him to make the fianl I lost AK to AQ for a simmiliar size pot.

That is Poker and to play in large fields with many good players you need to win several big pots where on average you are 50% in each of them so luck is a big part of the game in these kind of events.

Gus Hansen is my favorite and most respected player and I never abuse him in any way. Although I will try sometimes to upset him. But when you are friends that makes it difficult. I love Pokerchamps.com as well that Gus runs.

  107. Taurus Benton Says:

Just caught the Paris WPT… thought you might have skirted close to the edge of acceptable but by and large everything you did was fair play. Why not turn the screw if you catch a lucky flop when you are in a underdog situation? If it puts the other guy off his game then it turns the momentum your way. Quite a performance… for better or for worse you get everybody at the table to pay attention to you above all others.

I look forward to seeing how your style develops in the future.

  108. Owen Roth Says:

    Tony,

    You sad, demented, needy fool.

I’m glad to hear you’ve quit drinking. I cringed when I watched your abusive and soused play; you looked like a man riding a sweaty vodka-and-soda-powered roller-coaster, hoping your belittlement skills would grant you the victory that the J-4 couldn’t.

I’m glad to hear that you can control your behavior away from the table; can you control it at the table? You say your trash-talking is a strategy, despite the times you did it when you’d already won, or it gave away your hand. You say you never curse, and are never physically threaten someone, both obviously untrue. Your belated humanity after your opponents are eliminated strikes me as compensation for serious addictions and uncontrollable behavior.

Yes, your style is riveting, but so is a car crash. You exhibit four out of the five signs of behavior rationalization and denial. So I would indeed “get help,” before you get ‘helped’ by an opponent or a tournament director.

    Good luck,
    -OR

  109. Tony G Says:

Thanks for the long post. I only still talk to opponents if they have some chips left, I dont want to abuse anyone that has just gone broke. I can see your point of view and appreciate it. Everyone is different and I have my own style. Thansk fo rcaring so much and taking your time to write.

  110. Vivienne Says:

If your intent was to portray yourself as the schoolyard bully, then you were successful. I’ve heard it said that you are totally different away from the tables. In fact, he earned some solid respect and admiration taking you down like that.

    tony -

i thoroughly enjoyed your performance in paris … up to a point. it is difficult to say exactly where you crossed the line, but i was aware that, as a viewer, i went from an enthusiastic appreciation to feeling uncomfortable. as i recall you slammed your hand on the table at least once, and that was something that came across as threatening. it isn’t that you seemed like you were actually on the verge of being violent, but there was a shift from what seemed like a psychological tactic, to simply seeming out of control and unstable. i did not realize that you were drunk but that may have something to do with it. i would encourage you to find that line for yourself. i would never play a style like yours, nor would i like to be at a table with it. but that’s the point - it is disruptive and not illegal so more power to you for psyching people out in what is, after all, a game of psychological warefare. players who critique you are largely hypocritical since they know the essence of the game as well as anyone. i hope you’ll reply …

As long as you dont insult anyone personally and just keep running your mouth the way you do i see no reason you should change. The majority are with me on this one.

    SO dont you dare change!!!

Only two things bothered me about your behaviour in Paris.

    1. You said to people that you were going to kill them, of course this is just another way of saying you will beat them in poker but it just sounds a little too strong. The -when i kill em, i kill em part was allright though.

    2. When playing sunar you picked up a big pot and you screamed and slammed your fist against the table. This was also a little too much, it looked like you were in a bar playing poker piss drunk, you know what i mean.

You weren’t as vocal as usual and you looked to be trying too hard. I suggest booze and plenty of it! Believe me, it makes for quality TV! God I love TV Poker.

    Tony,

I believe you have what it takes to be a true pro, no doubt, but I definitly think that you need to relax on entering peoples personal space. Don’t put a hand near others chips, if you want a count- ask the player themselves.

You won some great hands with some great bluffs, but you can bluff just as well without being nasty. There’s a line, and I really feel you crossed it.
Plus it’s quite a big tell.
Surinder called you a couple times, and it was obvious you weren’t happy because you stopped talking. That was a massive tell for me, so as someone else said, the show you put on will not work forever.
Hopefully you can calm down and tone it back a bit. I’m a newcomer to the poker world, and if I thought there were more people like you acting the way you did at tables, I wouldn’t be bothered playing.

Just point me to the pro who who has publically defended you.

I’m pretty sure contrary to what you’ve said most players on the circuit just can’t bloody stand you, not as a player but as a person. If you’re happy with that by all means continue to be an obnoxious moron. IMO, you should try to refrain from entering another person’s personal space.

I also saw you on the party poker invitationa 2005 and I watched you there. Although I do not like your tactics you behaved there better than you did in Paris.

Anyways good luck…also, can I borrow say 1000 dollars…you got the money baby!

I hope you do understand though that people aren’t gonna like you…kind of like how in Professional Wrestling, it’s not real but people still hate the villian for the most part.

Anyways good luck…also, can I borrow say 1000 dollars…you got the money baby!

  143. Montesino Says:

Bottom line is you played within the rules, and it’s part of the game. Maybe the rules need to be changed, I’m too new to the game to tell. Now if we were talking baseball and the pitcher comes in a LITTLE inside that is exceptable, but trying to hit the batter is out of the question. I think you came close to “hitting the batter” a couple of times.

I wouldn’t be proud if a family member played that way. I couldn’t sleep at night thinking I pushed the limit that far. But it’s up to the judges not me. You do have talent though, good on you for that.

  144. CJ Says:

Oh sure, I think he played by the rules as well, with maybe the exception of pounding the table not but 12 inches from the opponent. I think that was a little frustration on your part. Your taunts were not working against the calm Surinder..so you resorted to making a physical prowess. When you did that I think that they would have been justified in calling a forfiet for you.
Other than that…nothing wrong with a little trash talk. Its always fun to take out the trash talker.

Mr. Guoga, I recently saw the rerun of your encounter with Mike Matusow at the Monte Carlo tournament. I thought this was absolutely histerical and I couldn’t help but wonder if you have had any encounters with Phil Hellmuth. If not, I would love to see it. I thnk it would be a very strenuous task for Phil, I don’t think he is very mentally strong. I would love to see you break him down. I can see him crying right now :-)

  147. AJ Says:

Tony, Good luck at the BadBoys event, and keep up the great work. Your style makes me laugh (alot) and definitely spice up sometimes otherwise boring groups of people. I hope to see you more on television, and also go head to head with the likes of Hellmuth, and other mega egos. What I like most about you, is the fact you seperate your poker life from your real life. You want to win and are a great competitor. Take care

  148. Adam Johnston Says:

Oh man.. best part at the final table was..

“I wish I had your hand..”

    *Looks at pocket 10s*

    “All in.”

    Hahahahaha…

I love your style man, it’s just like mine. I mean I don’t play professionally, just hit Canadian casino age, but keep it up man, only way to roll.
